3rd Annual Lygon Stevens Time To Live Memorial Climb

“Live the Legend”

“You are meant to be…a story to tell.” -Lygon

8/24/2010

There are many wonderful pictures and recountings of the Memorial Climb day going around. Our dear friends with Climbing for Christ have a blurb on their website. As the premier international Christian mountain-climbing community, we appreciate their efforts in getting people to high places. They reach the unreachable with the message of God’s love. www.climbingforchrist.org

8/7/2010

Absolutely awesome day. The views were stunning, the 110+ climbers (from 1 yr to 84) were amazing. A beautiful sunny, not-too-hot day (little windy at the Keyhole...). Record number of climbers - spreading out from Bear Lake, Emerald Lake, Black Lake, Chasm Lake, the Boulder Field and Keyhole, all over Longs Peak and Mt. Meeker and even Pagoda in an ambitious Grand Slam attempt!! An 11:00 prayer and praise moment (via radio and readings) to the One who created the mountains. Soreness, sunburns, and a few altitude sicknesses, but injuries were minimal - so sorry, Pastor Kurt!! BBQ feast at the finish.

May we always pursue the legend He has laid out for us, never fearing to step out on the path ahead.

2010 Climb T-shirts

T-shirts

One of our favorite parts of the day is the blanketing of the mountains with the network of Time To Live t-shirts. The message is always one of Lygon’s statements of faith and hope. As we spread out across the trails, lakes, and peaks, the message of the day speaks encouragement to fellow climbers and a challenge to the curious.

This year’s T-shirt will be similar to the following images:

Note:  The small Lygon logo will be on the right sleeve. The front says “Live the Legend”, and the back says “You are meant to be a story to tell.”  - Lygon

As always, the shirt is available in both a cotton as well as a moisture-wicking, antimicrobial synthetic. Sizes are both men and women's.  NOTE: The women’s fitted cotton shirt runs extremely small. Increasing your order by 2 sizes would not be unreasonable!  Synthetic shirts are $23.99. Cotton shirts are $17.99

**T-shirt orders must be received by 9am, August 1.**

There are a few shirts in both styles in men’s and women’s left. If you are interested, please contact us directly to check sizing.

About Longs Peak

Longs Peak is known as the monarch of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is the 15th highest mountain in Colorado, majestic at 14,255’. From its football field-sized summit, a 200-mile, 360-degree panoramic view is possible. You may see Pikes Peak 100 miles to the south, Medicine Bow Range north in Wyoming, the Continental Divide to the west, plains to the east, and Chasm Lake 2500 feet below. At many points along the way, the Longs Peak Trail offers stunning vistas making for several worthy destinations.

Longs Peak Summit - Loft Route  (14,255’)

13 miles roundtrip, 5,300’ elevation gain. From Longs Peak Trailhead, this trail passes through Goblin’s Forest, then splits off from the Keyhole Route at Chasm Junction. The trail continues on past Chasm Lake and the Ship’s Prow, up The Loft to the saddle between Mt. Meeker and Longs. The trail then passes around The Palisades where it rejoins the Keyhole Route for the Homestretch. This is an advanced route requiring route-finding skills, and there are no alternate destinations.

Start time 3:00 am. More difficult.

Longs Peak Summit - Keyhole Route  (14,255’)

15 miles roundtrip, 4,855’ elevation gain. The Keyhole Route to the summit of Longs Peak is the traditional route. Beginning at the Longs Peak Trailhead, it passes through Goblin’s Forest, splitting off from the Chasm Lake trail at Chasm Junction. Passing around Mt. Lady Washington, the trail then ascends to Granite Pass and into the Boulder Field. At this point, participants may choose to stop, watching the climbers on The Diamond, or to continue on to Mt. Lady Washington, the Keyhole, or the summit. Continuing on through the Boulder Field, the trail follows a tough quarter-mile climb to the Keyhole. Entering Class 3 climbing, the trail crosses the breath-taking northern slope Ledges into the Trough, then into the legendary sidewalk-sized (exposed) Narrows, then scrambles up the Homestretch to the summit.

Start time 3:00 am. Difficult.

The Boulder Field  (12,760’)

The Keyhole (13,160’)

At the Boulder Field, 6 miles from the trailhead, you may enjoy vistas that include the Mummy Range and Mt. Ypsilon, Hallet Peak, Flattop Mountain, and others. Participants may choose to stop here and watch the rock climbers on The Diamond, or continue on to an easy ascent to Mt. Lady Washington for a panoramic view of Mt. Meeker, The Diamond, Chasm Lake, the Ship’s Prow, and others. There are bathroom facilities and a campground at the Boulder Field.

The Keyhole is a quarter-mile steep ascent beyond the Boulder Field Campground. It is a stunning rock formation with spectacular westward views including Black Lake and Glacier Gorge 3000 feet below. The Agnes Vaille hut is here for rest and shelter in inclement weather.

Start time for either, 6:30 am. Strenuous Moderate.

Chasm Lake  (11,800’)

8.4 miles roundtrip, 2,360’ elevation gain. From the Longs Peak Trailhead, this trail follows the Longs Peak trail 3.7 miles. It ascends through subalpine forests to open tundra ending at Chasm Lake nestled in the natural amphitheater formed by the majestic mountain cirque of Longs Peak and Mt. Meeker. Chasm Lake sits directly below the sheer face of The Diamond. An ascent of Mt. Lady Washington is an additional destination from here.

Start time 7:00 am. Moderate.

 Black Lake  (10,620’)

9.4 miles roundtrip, 1380’ elevation gain. From Glacier Gorge JunctionTrailhead. The trail passes through verdant subalpine forests and flower-strewn meadows and is a favorite with hikers of all abilities. It leads up Glacier Gorge, a classic ice-carved valley sprawling directly below the sheer western flank of Longs Peak. There are several waterfalls, lakes, and numerous viewpoints along the route.

Start time 7:30 am. Moderate.

Emerald Lake  (10,160’)

3.6 miles roundtrip, 605’ elevation gain. From Bear Lake Trailhead, this trail winds through flowering fields, over bridges, and past three lakes - Bear Lake, Nymph Lake, and Dream Lake. The trail progresses through shady subalpine forests to a majestic landscape of stark barren rock with views of Hallet Peak and Flattop Mountain. This is the most popular hike in Rocky Mountain Park.

Start time 9:00 am. Easy.

Bear Lake  (9475’)

1.4 miles roundtrip, no elevation gain. For those who prefer, a beautiful scenic stroll to or around Bear Lake is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and get into the Time To Live is Now challenge. From the parking lot, a 256’ paved path leads to the lake’s edge. You may continue 1 mile to circle the lake on a dirt path sprinkled with benches and rest sites. Bathroom facilities, ranger station, and wheelchair access.

Starting time: Anytime. Easiest.

__________________________________________________________________________________

All participants are given recommended trailhead start times and encouraged to reach their chosen destinations by 11:00 am to participate in camaraderie and pictures. These time frames are intended to avoid afternoon lighting and enable participation in the barbeque. All, however, are welcome to pursue the day as they desire and join in any or all of these activities.

The point is: let yourself be challenged. The time to live is now!
